MBEC's Family at The Orphanage

It was one of the activities of MBEC's Lovers (a name for MBEC's family) outside the campus. Social Awareness Program, which was the first social activity performed by MBEC and was expected to be routinely done every year. The activities were included sharing some sustenance and introduced English as well as provide materials to children in the orphanage.

This year, MBEC in once a week (Sunday) spent quality time at the Prosperous Sholeh Charitable Foundation in Meruya for 4 weeks. It's fun to come together and shared with the children there. The first week was seen children seemed shy in interacting with MBEC's brother. In the next weeks their relationship with us are even closer. Even in the last week was seen sadness in their faces and MBEC's Lovers, without noticeably within 4 weeks was so fast, new relationships had to be re-established separately the obligations we have successfully completed. However, this is a note that would never be forgotten of a story from the heart of MBEC's Lovers, and we hope still having a chance to be among with them at the next opportunity. U'll Always in Our Hearts ....

DEBATE is a formal method of interactive and representational argument. Debate is a broader form of argument than logical argument, which only examine the consistency from axiom, and factual argument, which only examine what is or isn't the case or rhetoric which is technique of persuasion.

SPELLING BEE COMPETITION
Participant : Individual
(Junior High School and High School Students only)
Just like its name, this competition is about spelling words. You are challenged to mention letters that the word consists of. You may say it sounds easy at first, but after you try, you may find that even just a single word can twist your brain. Obviously, it's not as easy as ABC. Have you felt the challenge? We'll be waiting for you to join this competition.

STORYTELLING COMPETITION (New)

(High School Students only)
Storytelling is the conveying of events in words, images and sounds, often by improvisation or embellishment. Stories or narratives have been shared in every culture as a means of entertainment, education, cultural preservation and in order to instill moral values. Crucial elements of stories and storytelling include plot, characters and narrative point of view.

NEWSCASTING COMPETITION
Participant : Individual
(High School Students only)
NEWSCASTING is the broadcasting of various news events and other information via television, radio or internet. The content is usually either produced locally in a newsroom, or by a broadcast network. It may also include such additional material as sports coverage, weather forecasts, traffic reports, commentary and other material that the broadcaster feels is relevant to their audience.

SCRABBLE is a board game which is basically similar to crossword puzzle. The difference is that the letters in SCRABBLE have various values. In the game, each team should follow some rules while they try to form the best word from the randomly picked letters to get the highest score or to block the way of the opposite team player. Furthermore, SCRABBLE is actually not only about words, it is also about tactic and strategy. Join us and prove that you are the master of words.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1. What is MBEC exactly? Is that like an english course or something like that?

MBEC is not a place of English courses, MBEC is a place where you can sharpen your English language skills, learn English together and determine the ability of the English what is going on inside yourself and MBEC is also a place where you can learn how an organization stood and what the scope is happening in daily life.

2. Do i need to speak english fully in this organization? But i don't speak english well. How about that?

It's no need to worry. Well, each person may have been learning English since elementary school even pre-school and probably still takes practice to improve the English skills, but we are here to pursue the shared learning, with several programs related to public speaking, that might help you and improve the ability to speak english. we are here together to learn English in a fun way and joyful :)

3. How can I register to be MBEC's member? What are the requirements?

As we are one of Student Activity Units in Mercu Buana University, only UMB Students (Mercu Buana University Students) are allowed to register. We are available to register in early odd semester.

Debate Rules and Suggestions (Part 2)

Debate Ideas for Use in American English
This has been one of my most successful exercises to get students to free talk in English. It contains ten in a series of debates. To use this exercise, distribute one set the week before to the students. Explain that they will be required to argue or debate one side of the argument. They will not know in advance which side they will have to argue for or against. They, however, must come to class with a paper listing 5 arguments for and five against. Those papers will be picked up at the end of class. Those who do not have the papers will not be allowed to participate and will get a zero for that debate.

I choose up one side and give them for or against. Generally we have five to six on each side. I pick one student to start. They give a point on the side they are on and then they choose someone on the opposite side and they ask, "Do you agree with me?" They are to answer the person and then give a point of their own and ask someone if they agree and so on. I insist that you cannot disagree with everything. Argument For example if someone says that cigarettes cause disease and you are asked to agree, you should reply something like "You are correct to a point but", and then go on with your point. Students get really excited and go on for an hour debating.

I try to explain that the ideas are not always the true feeling of each students but just practice in talking and debating. It also lets them learn that no matter how strongly they feel about things others have equally opposite opinions. I give the argument for and against to the students the week before the debate. They do not know whether they will argue for or against. This has worked very well.

Definition of Argument:

Synonyms of Argument:

Argue, quarrel, wrangle, squabble, haggle, and bicker.

These verbs are compared as they mean to dispute.

Argue This implies intent to persuade an adversary in debate.
Quarrel This stresses animosity and estrangement.
Wrangle This refers to loud, contentious argument and squabble to minor argument over a petty or trivial matter.
Haggle This specifies verbal bargaining usually over a price, in a petty way.
Bicker This suggests sharp, recurrent exchange of remarks on a mean or petty level.

Syarat pengajuan Beasiswa PPA 2009:

1. Terdaftar sebagai mahasiswa Universitas Mercu Buana TA 2008/2009 minimal semester II dan paling tinggi semester VII bagi Program S1 dan Semester VI bagi Program Diploma III.

2. Mengajukan permohonan tertulis kepada Rektor Universitas Mercu Buana, dengan melampirkan :

Foto copy Kartu Tanda Mahasiswa (KTM) sebagai mahasiswa reguler aktif yang dibuktikan dengan KRS (legalisir).
Foo copy Rekening Listrik bulan terakhir dan atau bukti pembayaran PBB.
Surat pernyataan tidak menerima beasiswa dari sumber lain yang diketahui oleh Direktur Kemahasiswaan.
Foto copy Kartu Keluarga.
Surat Keterangan Berkelakuan baik dari Pimpinan Fakultas/Prodi.

Syarat pengajuan Beasiswa BBM 2009:

Sama seperti PPA, tapi poin terakhir (Surat Keterangan Penghasilan Orang Tua/Wali pemohon dan disahkan oleh yang berwenang) diganti menjadi: Surat Keterangan Tidak mampu dari Lurah/Kepala Desa yang diminta oleh orang tua pemohon dan disahkan oleh yang berwenang.

Kepada para mahasiswa yang akan mengajukan permohonan beasiswa, harap memperhatikan dengan seksama persyaratan yang harus dipenuhi sesuai dengan jenis beasiswa yang diminta. Apabila persyaratan yang diajukan tidak lengkap, maka permohonan beasiswa tidak dapat diteruskan kepada Kopertis Wilayah III.

Pendaftaran permohonan beasiswa akan ditutup pada tanggal 6 April 2009.

The Stock widget allows you to keep track of your financial portfolio at all times. After selecting the Stock widget, click on the edit drop down and select "Edit Symbols". You can then enter in a list of comma separated stock symbols and save your data. The edit dropdown allows you to switch from the initial list view to a scrolling ticker view and vice versa. The 13th ALSA National English Competition 2009
“Beauty in Variety, Liberty in Unity, English for Entity”
Asian Law Students’ Association (ALSA) is an autonomous and non profit institution of which its members are the students of law schools from various nations in Asia such as Indonesia, Singapore, Philippine, Malaysia, Thailand, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, China, and Hong Kong. ALSA Indonesia itself consists of 12 members of local chapters from various reputable public universities throughout Indonesia. As one of them, ALSA Local Chapter University of Indonesia (ALSA LC-UI) is an association where its members can develop themselves as well as the society in advancing. One of its ways to develop the society is by conducting several beneficial events.
ALSA National English Competition (ALSA E-Comp) has always been one of the events ALSA LC-UI proudly present. ALSA E-Comp is compilation of scientific competitions in linguistic field with English as the communicational media. The purpose of this event is to facilitate participants in improving their skills and talents through a competitive yet sportive atmosphere of competitions. To achieve the purpose, we present you The 13th ALSA National English Competition 2009 (ALSA E-Comp 2009) on 16th – 21st April 2009 with “Beauty in Variety, Liberty in Unity, English for Entity” as its theme. This theme is chosen because ALSA E-Comp 2009 itself is a nation-wide event where there will be various types of participants in it. We believe that variety is beautiful, that the freedom and liberty of expression can exist without ruining the unity, and that English can create an entity among all the varieties.
ALSA E-Comp 2009 has 8 competitions for high school and university students throughout the region. The purpose of holding this event is to facilitate participants in improving their skills and talents through a competitive yet sportive atmosphere of competitions. The 8 competitions are: Debate, News Casting,
Story Telling, Speech, Paper Presentation, Spelling Bee, Battle of Brain, and ‘E-Doc’. ‘E-Doc’ itself is the newest competition branch in the history of ALSA E-Comp. It is a competition in which the contestants are required to cover the events of ALSA E-Comp 2009 itself with cell phone as the media. This competition is expected to develop participants’ ability of using English in a way that is not only
educative, but also entertaining and creative. Thus, we humbly invite you to participate in this nation-wide, prestigious, and challenging event. Enclosed with this invitation are registration forms and further explanations. We hope you can be a part of ALSA E-Comp 2009 so that together we can help developing the usage of English in daily life of the society.

COMPETITIONS

1. DEBATE
Debate is a group competition which tests each participant’s knowledge and their ability
in giving arguments in order to support their motion. This competition will use the Asian
Parliamentary format, where two (2) teams –consisting three (3) speakers each– will be
competing against each other. The first team will carry out a 7-minute speech which will
be followed by a 3-minute reply speech. The purposes of this competition are; to
stimulate critical thinking and the sense of judgment of each participant, to convey the
sense of debating as well as to enhance the competitive spirit of the participants.
2. NEWS CASTING
News Casting is an individual competition where each participant is required to read the
news provided by the committee. In this competition each participant is expected to
present the news with clear articulation just as a professional news presenter would do.
They will be judged accordingly to their fluency in speaking English. The purpose of this
competition is to enhance the importance of speaking English in a well manner, also to
find potential as well as talented future news presenter.
3. SPELLING BEE
Spelling bee is an individual competition where each participants is challenged to spell as
many complicated English words as possible correctly within the time limit. The fastest
participant who is able to spell correctly most words given by the Judge will be
determined as the winner. The purpose of this competition is no other than to improve the
ability of spelling English of the participants.
4. STORY TELLING
Story telling is an individual competition in which every participant is required to retell a
story given by the committee with their own method in an interesting way to impress the
Judges. The winner of this competition will get the honor to present on the night of the
closing ceremony of ALSA E-Comp 2009. The outcome of this competition is to the
improve participants’ self-confidence, in addition to develop their theatrical skills and
their ability in performing in English

5. SPEECH
Speech is an individual competition where the participants are required to give a speech
on the topic given by the committee in eight (8) minutes. The aspects judged from their
appearance are the content, grammar, pronunciation, and their way of presenting the
speech. By contributing to this competition, the participants will get the opportunity to
learn on how to present orally in a well manner.
6. PAPER PRESENTATION
Paper presentation is an individual competition where each contestant is required to make
a paper about a topic given by the committee and then present it in front of the judges.
The outcome of this competition is to enhance contestants’ ability in making papers in
English as well as to present it.
7. BATTLE OF THE BRAINS
Battle of the brains is a group competition where each group compete against each other
to answer the questions given before the other group does. The more correct answer one
group scores, the bigger their chance in winning the competition. The benefit of joining
this competition is that the participants will be more aware of the situations happen in the
world, since the questions will be as regarding to the current situations which happen.
8. E-DOCUMENTARY
E-Documentation (hereafter known as E-Doc) is a new branch of competition in
ALSA E-Comp 2009. It is a group competition where the participants are required to
make a short movie which films the activities happened during the conduction of ALSA
E-Comp 2009 itself. They are allowed to use phone-camera to record the activities until
the fourth day, and alter them. The winning movie will be screened on the night of the
ALSA E-comp 2009 closing ceremony. The purpose of this competition is to develop the
creativity of the participants in expressing ideas in short movies.

ACCOMODATION (for participants outside Jakarta)
The committee is able to arrange the accomodation for participants coming from outside Jakarta,
with responsibility for the payment upon the participants, excluded from the registration fee.
Please specify the place, time and date of your arrival at least 2 (two) days before the arrival.
Accomodation will be placed at Wisma Makara University of Indonesia.
Fee : Rp 110.000,-/person/night (including breakfast)
• Each room will contain 4 people (women and men are separated) and
could be from various institutions.

And if you have that two letter list memorized, put a word directly next to another word using two letter words to connect them. You get points for every word you create, so it makes sense that if you create four words instead of one, you get more points.

3. Look at the board, not your pieces. You know what you have, now look at the open spaces on the board and see what's available to use. You could miss something really good if you make a word out of some of your seven letters and then spend your turn trying to find a space to fit that word, instead of vice versa. Of course, if you have a seven letter word or something, take the time to make sure it won't fit in somewhere.

4. The bonuses. Almost never should you put anything on the board that doesn't touch a bonus of some kind. If you have a choice between putting down azalea and zoo, where azalea is a smarter sounding word but doesn't touch any thing, but zoo is on a double word score, don't miss out on zoo. No one cares that you know bigger words than them. They care that they're stomping you into the ground with words like house and speedy.

5. Qua- it's short, it's easy to put down (A-qua) and it's the fastest way you're going to get rid of that damn Q.

6. Don't hoard the big point letters. When you get later in the game, it's nearly impossible to get these down, and if the game is close and you have 31 points in letters on your rack, you just gave up 60 points, and probably the game. Use them as quickly as possible, and if there are no
good point options, still get rid of them. You'll get luck sometimes with Quark on a triple score or something, but don't hold out on it (62 points by the way).

7. It's never over. If you get a big 50 pointer and then two 8s, but your opponent is putting down solid 20 pointers every turn, you're still not winning. Look for the big points every round; don't gloat in your success after one good play. The game is long. Play it through.

8. It's like chess. Don't leave open easy spots for your opponent to attack you. You're throwing the game like that. If you have a halfway decent word that opens an S right beside a triple word score, don't do it. It's as good as giving the opponent at least 40 points. Play something weaker and wait for the space to come open to you instead. It's a mind game in more than way. Try to out think your opponent even as you try to out think yourself and the dictionary.

Scrabble is one of the most popular games of all time because it allows you to display your intellect at the same time as using subtle strategy and attack methods. It's not one or the other, it's a hybrid; one which you need to spend the right amount of time thinking of both aspects to properly win the game. Think of it like a crossword puzzle. No one knows all the clues on a crossword puzzle. They use the letters and clues from other spaces to figure out the blanks. It's strategy more than knowledge. Scrabble is almost exactly the same, but with points.

Tips to Transform Your Scrabble Game

Alright, so your mother-in-law, a PhD in English Literature, has challenged you, a lowly salesclerk at the local bookstore, to a “friendly” game of Scrabble. Sound like a hopeless case? Certainly not! More than just a rivalry of vocabularies, Scrabble is a game of strategy. Equipped with the right tricks, even a child could give your mother-in-law a run for her money!

This article will give you five proven tips guaranteed to transform your Scrabble game. Whether you are a novice to the game, or looking to increase your skill in order to compete in clubs or tournaments, a little practice with these techniques will bring instant results!

Tip #1: Two-by-Twos

Experienced Scrabble players agree that the first key to success is memorizing the list of acceptable two-letter word combinations. This sounds harder than it really is. There are only 96 two letter words, and you undoubtedly know 23 of them.

(Some lists include 120 two-letter words, depending on which dictionary you refer to. The 1998 Chambers Dictionary, as well as the Chambers Official Scrabble Words qualifies 120 words, while the Merriam Webster Official Scrabble Players Dictionary includes only 96. A good word of thumb would be to decide at the outset of a game which dictionary you will be using. I’d focus on the list of 96 words, as they are universally accepted in almost all dictionaries.)

Why is this word list so valuable, considering you only use two tiles? Knowing the two letter words helps you to build parallel words, enabling you to count your letters twice for each word you form. This dramatically increases your score! This skill is absolutely essential when the board is “closed,” (meaning that there are no wide open spaces to build new words in), as well as at the end of the game, when you must empty out your rack.

Memorizing this list only takes minutes if you associate each letter with the number of words it forms, (for example, there are 16 “A” words, 5 “B” words, etc.). Going through the lists and becoming familiar with the lesser known words is usually all it takes to commit the list to memory. It’s nice to know there are a few words that don’t require vowels!

The 96 words are:

aa, ab, ad, ae, ag, ah, ai, al, am, an, ar, as, at, aw, ax, ay, ba, be, bi, bo, by, de, do, ed, ef, eh, el, em, en, er, es, et, ex, fa, go, ha, he hi, ho, id, if, in, is, it, jo, ka, la, li, lo, ma, me, mi, mm, mo, mu, my, na, ne, no, nu, od, oe, of, oh, om, on, op, or, os, ow, ox, oy, pa, pe, pi, re, sh, si, so, ta, ti, to, uh, um, un, up, us, ut, we, wo, xi, xu, ya, ye, yo.

Tip #2: “Racking” up Points by Anagramming

The difference between an average and an advanced Scrabble player has to do with the number of options a player can find in a given rack. Don’t just find one word and give up—keep moving those tiles around. There may very well be a better option than the one you find initially. Even if you end up using the same tiles, one word may score a higher value than another based on the location of the bonus squares. In addition, you may opt for one word over another because it is harder for your opponent to build on. For instance, if you have a hunch that your opponent has an S you should avoid laying down a noun, as this would allow him/her to “hook” on, scoring points for both words!

Tip #3: Keep it Hot

This hint may seem obvious at first, although there’s a bit more to it than first meets the eye. As you formulate your options on the board, focus on the “hot spots,” or the squares which award you double and triple the value of your tile and/or word. Use these squares to even better advantage by building parallel words, allowing you to use the bonus square two times (once for the horizontal word, and again for the vertical.) This is where that list of two-letter words comes in handy, particularly the words that contain high-scoring letters like J, Q, X, and Z. For example, the word “ex” used in a parallel position where the X lands on a triple would score at least 26 points.

The other side of this equation is that you must be careful not to make these hot spots available for your opponent! However, if you have a great word that opens up a triple, don’t throw it out the window. Weigh up your score against what your opponent may likely get. You may still come out ahead. Who knows? Your opponent may even pass up the triple, giving you a shot!

Tip #4: The Q—boon or bane?

No doubt about it, the Q is one of the most difficult tiles to play; therefore, it demands attention. There are a few tricks that can help you turn the Q to your advantage.

First of all, it’s advisable to commit to memory a few Q words that don’t require a U. Yes, they exist, and they are worth a lot of points, besides! So, here is your second (and final, for now) list of words to memorize: qaid, qanat, qat, qindar, qintar, sheqel, tranq, qoph, qwerty, faqir.

The words “aid” and “at” are particularly helpful for those looking to dump a Q, and this goes for your opponent too! Take care not to lay down either word if you suspect your opponent of having the Q on his/her rack, particularly at the end of the game! (I know this from sad experience; this oversight cost me an important match!)

Whatever you do, don’t hold on to Qs for more than a turn or two, hoping to draw a U. (This also goes for holding onto Us in case of drawing a Q.) Try to get it off your rack as soon as possible, as you lessen your chance of playing a good move when you’re only using six of your tiles. And if the game is close to the end you may want to consider trading it if there aren’t any options on the board. You certainly DO NOT want to get stuck with an unplayed Q at the end of the game, as it automatically adds 20 points to your opponent’s score.

Tip #5: Plan for BINGOs

Our last tip can be quite satisfying once it is mastered. It has to do with creating BINGO words (words which use all seven tiles) and is remarkably easy, once you know how to do it. Start by sorting your rack according to common word endings and save these letter combinations. One of the most valuable sets is “ING.” This takes care of three of your letters, and it’s much easier to form a four or five letter verb that works with “ING.” Voila! You have a BINGO! Some other common endings you want to watch for are -ed, -er, -ier, -iest, and -ies. I’ve even used -ation to good advantage. Un- and re- are good letters to set aside for word beginnings. Laying down your first BINGO is almost a rite of passage in the Scrabble world.

Now you are prepared to take on that grandiloquent mother-in-law; put that palaverous brother in his place. With practice, you may soon be able to join the ranks of the real Scrabble champions.

Having good luck and a decent vocabulary might be enough to win you a game of Scrabble, but what if you’re against a particularly formidable opponent, or a relative you really don’t like and would like to wipe the floor with? Fortune and anagrammatical skills will only get you so far; here are my top three tips for really sticking it to your opponent.

#3 - Use a word that looks mis-spelt

Here’s a short list of perfectly valid Scrabble words, but which your opponent will presume you’ve spelt incorrectly. They, of course, will challenge you and reach for the Scrabble dictionary. You, on the other hand, will sit back smugly, knowing that you’ve just earnt yourself an extra turn. Of course, try this trick more than once and your opponent will call your bluff and allow all of your weird words through, unchallenged. This, in turn, will give you the chance to use bogus words like cromulent, embiggens and kwyjibo.

There are piles of words in the Scrabble dictionary that fit the description; these are just a few examples.

So you’ve picked up the dreaded Q tile, but no matter how many tiles you get rid of, you just can’t pick up the U. It doesn’t have to be the end of the world, there are plenty of words you can use without a U following the Q. Just don’t expect me to tell you what these words mean.

Negative: Westminster

The affirmative team argued that current energy production hurts minority and poor communities. Minorities are exposed to a dangerous environment because energy plants are located close to their homes. The plan funds incentives for renewable energy in low income and minority areas. They argued that we have an obligation to act to decrease the suffering of minority and low income people in the status quo. They note that renewable energy will create 40 million jobs and benefit poor communities economically.
Negative Strategy
Topicality: The negative argued that

the word "necessary" in the plan was too vague and made the affirmative a moving target. The affirmative responded that there is no resolutional basis for this argument. In addition, there are plenty of offensive arguments available for the negative.
ASPEC: The negative argued that the one key way to get change is to discuss the mechanisms and institutions that can affect change. They argued that the affirmative failed to do this. The affirmative said that this was an unpredictable burden. They also argued that it is infinitely regressive. The negative could always require them to be more specific. Debates about agents decrease education because we do not discuss the topic.
India Deal: The negative argued that the India Deal will pass in the status quo and that it is massively unpopular. If Bush passed the affirmative plan, he would not have enough political capital to pass the India Deal. The negative argued that the India Deal was key to United States-India relations. The affirmative read numerous cards that argued that the India Deal will not pass in the status quo.
Elections: The negative argued that Obama is currently ahead, but by a slim margin. The plan is popular and would allow McCain to capitalize on its success. Obama is key to a Middle East peace agreement. The affirmative read evidence that McCain will win in the November elections. They argued that their evidence is better because it is an aggregate of several polls. They also argued that Obama will not get a peace agreement in his term because of his other priorities.
Counterplan: The negative read a states counterplan. They argued that state policy making is good because it mobilizes people at a local level and increases democratic participation. Democratic participation is key to implementation and sustainability of the plan. They also argued that centralization of power in the federal government is harmful because it is too big. The affirmative made a plan flaw argument because the negative's plan used a comma instead of the word "and" between "low income" and "minority." They also argued that only congress can solve the problem. If the states implemented the plan, it would violate the commerce clause. Also, states would raise money by increasing the sales tax. Regressive taxes harm minorities.
The negative went for the counterplan.
The decision was a 3-0 for the affirmative.
The judges commented that they voted affirmative because the negative changed the text of their counterplan in the 2NC and became a moving target by clarifying that they would not raise sales taxes to pay for projects.

Greenhill argued that the United States federal government should include algae in the list of renewable fuels that receive a tax incentive and include it in the Renewable Fuels Standards. This change would increase the types of fuels that could be used to meet the minimum amount of renewable energy in gasoline. Algae can become the fuel of the future if it gets off the ground. The affirmative argued that incentivizing algae will lead to a decrease in ethanol use. Relying too heavily on ethanol leads to a monocrop. Monocrops destroy biodiversity and can lead to decreased food security. The affirmative claimed that we are one monocrop away from starvation. Algae also produces phosphorous. When we grown food we deplete phosphorous and need to replenish it. It would be catastrophic if we depleted phosphorous; it is as critical as water.
Negative Strategy

Solvency: Grapevine argued that the plan would fail because algae would not become cost competitive. Also, because the plan does not stop ethanol use completely, phosphorous would still be depleted so the affirmative cannot solve for their advantage. The affirmative countered that the plan would give a tax incentive to algae to make it profitable. Algae will renew the phosphorous.

Topicality: The negative argued that the word increase in the resolution means that plans must increase an existing program. They argue that this interpretation creates a more stable literature base for the negative. The affirmative gives a counter definition that increase is to make greater in number and does not mean they have to increase an existing program. They argue that the negative's interpretation kills negative ground for disadvantages. They also argue that they do increase alternative energy within an existing program-the Renewable Fuels Standard.
Counterplan: Grapevine runs a counterplan that the United States should ban all ethanol. They do not go for this argument. The affirmative perms the argument and also argues that algae is not cost competitive in the status quo so without the plan algae would not take off. If algae does not increase the counterplan cannot solve for the phosphorous advantage.
Discourse Critique: Grapevine said that the affirmative used language that made them sound like nuclear experts. They said that taking the role of defense intellectuals distorts the truth and incites violence. The affirmative argued that the negative also talked about nuclear war in one of their impact cards. The negative responded that conditionality is good. It leads to a fair division of ground. The affirmative had tons of time to write the affirmative plan. Conditionality allows the negative to look for the best option. They also argued that the perm checks abuse because it allows the affirmative to advocates multiple worlds also.
Global -Local Critique: The negative argued that the language of nationalism and sovereignty makes the state paramount and leads to violence. They argue that we should instead act within our own communities. Stop thinking of UN peacekeeping and start thinking of the neighborhood watch. They argue that their advocacy solves the case, not in the traditional way, but they solve for the world in which the impacts can happen. They concede that they do not solve for peak phosphorous, but that dehumanization outweighs it. They argue that utility is the ultimate evil and must be rejected at any cost. It is dehumanizing because it makes everyone into numbers. Asking which option will save the most people led to Hiroshima. It allows people to be extendible. Also, no one can foresee the future. The plan may have unintended consequences. In addition, people aren't reasonable actors. They are only slaves of the state. The state tells us lies and trumps up certain problems to keep its power. They argued that allowing their framework in debate increases philosophical education and forces the affirmative to defend their assumptions. The affirmative argued that the power of the state to embrace utility is good. We can only work from within the system to achieve any results. The only way to stop global atrocities is to recognize them and enact policies to stop them. They read a card that said resource wars are the worst form of dehumanization. They argued that the alternative does not stop the phosphorous depletion. Phosphorous is key to keep people alive. Don't forget about a billion people suffering because the negative wants to embrace a certain philosophy. They also permed the argument. The negative argued that their perm is abusive because it is either intrinsic or severance. The affirmative argued that their perm is not abusive because they do not go for it. It does not make them a moving target. The judges should reject the argument, not the team.
The negative won on a 3-0 decision.

WHAT TO DO ON CASE BUILDING?

Well, the first thing to do on case building is knowing where your team mates are! I could not emphasise more on the importance of that. But assuming that you have had your team mates (not the imaginary one), motions verbatim, opponents (again, not the imaginary one), and knowledge on which room you will be debating in, this essay will elaborate on what are the necessary contents of affirmative’s and negative’s case.
In principle the affirmative’s role is to convince the adjudicator to support the motion and the negative’s role should convince the adjudicator to have the motion fall. As for what exactly the affirmative or the negative should prove in making their cases differs from the types of the motion.

There are 2 types of motions:
1. Value-judgement motions (e.g.: THBT that prostitution is degrading female).
In this kind of motion the debate is on proving the idea. It is not necessarily about taking particular action/policy.
In the example of the motion,
the debate should not be about whether prostitution should be legalised or not, but it should be about whether commercial sex trade is something that degrades women or not.
In proving an idea, usually the affirmative team needs to consider:
• How they will prove it (indicator of measurement)?
In the example of the motion, to prove that prostitution is degrading, the affirmative needs to explain what is/are the criteria(on) of 'degrading to women' before they can prove why prostitution fits to that/those criteria(on). For example, something is considered 'degrading to women' when it ‘does not treat women as a subject with intelligence, will and emotion’.
In setting the criterion, the affirmative needs to explain the reasoning of why the criterion is valid. So, affirmative needs to explain why something that does 'not treat women as a subject with intelligence, will and emotion' is indeed degrading.
• Provide the assertion, reasoning and examples to prove the criteria(on)
In the example of the motion, after setting and explaining the criterion of degrading as 'not treating women as a subject with intelligence, will and emotion', the affirmative team then needs to prove why prostitution fits to that criterion. The affirmative can prove this in various ways. One example is to look at the way the individual sex workers are being treated by the clients. Another example is to look at how the sex worker as an occupation is seen by the society. These various angles are the team splits.
In negating the idea, usually the negative team can choose one of these 2 options:
• Reject the criteria set by affirmative, set a new criteria, then prove why the motion does not fit to negative's criteria
In the example of the motion, the negative disagrees to 'not treating women as a subject with intelligence, will and emotion' means degrading. In disagreeing to the criteria, the negative should provide the reasoning or rebuttal to the affirmative's reasoning. Subsequently, the negative should set the new criteria(on). For example, something is considered degrading if it does 'not allowing women to have options'. Negative also need to provide reasoning why negative's criteria is a more suitable.
Then the negative should prove why prostitution does not fit to the negative's criterion - that prostitution is a form of option. Again, the negative can prove this in various angles, from the angle of ‘freedom to do control one's body’ or ‘freedom to define morality’, etc. Again, these various angles can be the team splits.
• Accept the criteria set by the affirmative but prove that the motion does not fit to that criteria
In the example of the motion, the negative can also agree that the criterion of degrading is 'not treating women as a subject with intelligence, will and emotion'. In that case, the negative should prove that prostitution does not fit to that criterion - that prostitution still allows rooms for women to be seen with intelligence, will and emotion.
2. Proposal motions (e.g.: THW ban prostitution).
In the proposal motion, the arguments of both teams should not solely be in the idea level, but also about what action should be taken by a certain party
In the example of the motion, the action is banning prostitution by the government/state. It is not enough to prove the notion that prostitution is degrading female, but also to prove why the government should regulate something that degrades female.
In doing so, the affirmative team should:
• Present a problem - the context that makes affirmative wants to propose something
In the example of the motion, the problem can be the huge number of female that are being degraded as sex workers - that it is not acceptable for dignified countries to allow such practices to take place. In other motions, the problems can vary from environmental problem, poverty, violence, etc.
• Put forward a proposal
In the example of the motion, the proposal can be for the government of a particular country (that is currently legalizing prostitution) to ban prostitution. By banning, the affirmative needs to specify what form of banning: banning the street solicitation, or brothel house or all forms of sex trade.
Affirmative should also prove that the proposal is feasible - can be implemented
• Prove that the proposal will address the problem
In the example of the motion, the affirmative should prove that banning prostitution will significantly contribute in minimizing female degradation.
The affirmative does not necessarily have to prove that the proposal will eliminate the problem completely by arguing that their proposal will solve poverty or environmental destruction. But it is imperative to prove that the proposal does make a significant contribution in addressing the problem.
• Prove that the proposal will not create greater harm or that the harm created by the proposal is minor compare to the importance of the proposal’s benefit.
In the example of the motion, the affirmative will have to prove why the proposal will not create greater harm to female/society/freedom. Affirmative can argue that the proposal will not at all hurt the female sex workers livelihood, society’s economy, or the women’s freedom.
Alternatively, the affirmative can acknowledge that the proposal might mean no income for the sex workers (acknowledging harm). But in comparison, for these female not to be degraded and receive state’s protection will benefit them as a whole. Thus, affirmative acknowledging the harm, but argue that it is insignificant compare to the overall benefit
In negating the affirmative case, the negative team should
• Defend the current system or alternative proposal
In the example of the motion, the negative can either defend the current condition of legal prostitution. Or create an alternative proposal: not allowing prostitution freely but allowing it only on certain places (localization)
In defending current system/alternative proposal the negative can do one or more of the following strategy:
• Disagree that there is any problem in the first place
In the example of the motion, the negative can argue that there is no female degradation because the sex workers are living a life where they choose to do what they want to do. Thus, there is no need to have the proposal.
• Acknowledging that there is a problem but the proposal does not address the problem
Another way of negating in the example of the motion, the negative can agree that there is female degradation in the practice of prostitution. However, the proposal of banning prostitution will not stop prostitution from existing or significantly minimize it. The prostitution can still go underground. Hence, it does not address the problem.
• Prove that the proposal will create greater harm
Negative can also agree that there is a problem of female degradation and that the proposal addresses the problem. But banning prostitution will create more significant harm. It will cause underground prostitution that cannot be controlled by the government and makes the female degradation worse than it was when the prostitution was legal.
It is important to note that the team should make careful judgment in choosing which strategy to run with to avoid inconsistency in negative case. It is often the case that each speaker in the team runs different negating strategy that looks like self-contradiction. Another way of avoiding contradiction is to use the “even if” strategy.

Finally, this essay only serves as guidance. At the end of the day, how to case build? To try to develop a case that will make the adjudicators support or against the motion - as simple as that!

DEBATE TIPS 1........
The first round of the QDU took place last week, and I am involved in a team (fortunately we won). Seeing that this is a world wide activity I felt that I should write some basic tips for debating, as I realize how hard it is when I first started. I have been debating for 5 years and hopefully I can pas my experience on to others.
I'm not sure if different countries have different types of debating, but Australia has a system where there are 3 people on each side who take it in turns to argue a point.
(1) - You are always right - no matter what you really believe, if you want to win then you have to know that what ever you say is correct and your opposition is always wrong.
(2) - Strong central argument - after you make each point link it back to your teams case. This makes the whole team look more prepared and gets big marks.
(3) - Rebut - if they have an incorrect fact, rebut it. If they do not link back to their teams case, rebut it. If they give an example that has no relevence, rebut it. Remember, the opposition is always wrong.
(4) - If you need more time, summarize - a good summary not only gets good points, it also increases your time. If you go under time you lost points and the same occurs if you go over. Try to find a balance.

(5) - Never insult the opposition - no matter how much you want to, don't! If you want to insult something, do it to their argument. Don't use personal attacks if you want to win.
(6) - Have passion - believe in what you are saying and you probably will win. Speak from the heart, but also use logic and academic research.

Our Activities in MBEC

We have many activities, such as daily activities (practice Scrabble, Storytelling, Newscasting, Spelling Bee, Debate), annual Event (English Event), go to somewhere (visit exciting place to meet tourist), etc. Also (in complete), Mercu Buana English Club has many programs that each program has its own specialty, such as:

1. New Member’s Recruitment & Fasting Break
This program is held to give a chance to Mercu Buana’s students who want to be MBEC’s member by register himself/herself to MBEC’s registration.
We also have "Fasting Break", an event which held annually and to increase togetherness among new members.

2. Leadership Training Program
One of MBEC’s annual program which recruit talented member who will lead this organization and training them how to manage an organization. There will be discussion formal and informal, games, out bond, talent show and many more.

3. Conversation Class / Competition Oriented Class
Program for those who want to improve their English, four days a week, from Monday to Thursday Most of Mercu Buana’s students want a progress in learning English, so that MBEC provide in the afternoon, and it’s free of charge. The members will have grammar, tenses, vocabulary, and conversation by passing three grade, basic, intermediate, and advance.

4. Charity Fair / Social Awareness Event
This program is aimed to share our big loves to the other people who need our loves. This is an annual program that's pointed to help and improve our awareness to them who need it with love and english-based. MBEC's lovers give the lessons about english to the people and show that english is an important material to be learned.

5. Visiting Tourist
The program that will take a day long is presented not only for MBEC’s member but also for Mercu Buana’s students generally. By visited one of the tourist object, they can socialize what they’ve learned from conversation class by speaking English in a day at tourist object.
6. English Event
This one of special event in MBEC, because this program involves high school and university students in Jakarta to join a competition such as debate contest, news reader contest, writing contest, quick and precise contest, scrabble contest, spelling bee contest, storytelling contest, talent show contest, also games and bazaar.

7. Excursion Study
We visited others University inside or outside of Jakarta to introduce MBEC and to enlarge our knowledge about how to manage and development English club. It’s a way to compare the management system that we have with theirs.

8. Sarasehan (The Gatherings)
This informal program is presented for all of MBEC’s members to discuss the obstruction and MBEC’s progress.

9. Musyawarah Besar (Great Deliberation)
This general conference as a program to make an inaugurated MBEC’s “Anggaran Dasar and Anggaran Rumah Tangga” (AD/ART), and to choose the next chairman of MBEC with the new program.Etc…

___News Casting Class___
Here, we learnt not only on how to read news, but also how to behave like news anchors as seen on TV. We learn how to read news well and correctly, manner wise, delivering weather forecast, traffic reports, as well as doing an interview with a guest.

___Story Telling Class___
First, we learn first things first to erase every ounce of shyness that they may have in order to perform all-out when telling whatever stories they have. The ability to deliver the stories in an expressive and interesting way is the objective of story telling.

We have also debate class for who wants to be a good speaker. It'll also improve your skills to give your own opinion, giving fact arguments,etc.

___Debate Class___
Debate is the right place for you, who wishes to develop your English ability, not only in grammar, pronunciation, and vocabulary, but also in the way of thinking, to use logic, common knowledge, as well as how to converse publicly, and in the same time, convince people. The ability to analyze the opponents' case and teamwork is also tested here. Sounds tough? But the payoffs sure are rewarding.
We are adapting 3 debating styles: Australasian Parliamentary, Asian Parliamentary, and the British Parliamentary.

___Scrabble Class___
The Scrabble game may seem simple for some people, but when you explore it deeper, you will discover that arranging 7 tiles of letters into meaningful words is not that simple. Besides compiling words onto the board, you also sharpen your ability in finding the right strategy to win the game. Non only you will broaden your vocabulary knowledge, you also have the chance to 'show-off' on the board. So, to all words-lover out there, we will be waiting for you in the next board.

___Spelling Bee Class___
A spelling bee is an event where contestants are asked to spell English words. You may say it sounds easy at first, but after you try, you may find that even just a single word can twist your brain. Obviously, it's not as easy as ABC.

All MBEC’s program is also related with MBEC’s goal, to improve English, especially Mercu Buana’s student and make English as second national language that also used in our daily activities and our life. So, if you want to join us, don’t be afraid to improve your english here,...
